Land Acknowledgments
What is a Land Acknowledgment?
A Land Acknowledgment is a statement that occurs at the beginning of events, meetings, or gatherings in order to honor and recognize Indigenous peoples who have lived on land and territory, prior to colonial/settler contact. This is the responsibility of the event host.
What is a Land Opening or Welcome?
A Land Opening or Welcome is a practice rooted in the idea of extending respect and invitation for people to be on the land, recognizing that many Indigenous communities view the land as a living entity with which they maintain a reciprocal relationship. This is a responsibility that can be offered by the local Indigenous communities.
